Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie (originally Angelina
Jolie Voight) is an American actress and director, famous for her sexy appeal,
edginess and her humanitarian work. The role she played in Girl, Interrupted
(1999) was one of the roles she received for the Academy Award. Jolie, the
daughter of actor Jon Voight, spent most of her growing up in New York. She
moved to Los Angeles when she was 11. She was a student at the Lee Strasberg
Theatre and Film Institute for two years, and then enrolled at Beverly Hills
High School. New York University later taught her drama. Jolie also performed
in theatre productions and modelled for music videos. It was during Hackers
(1995) when Jolie got to know Jonny Lee Miller, a British actor (married in
1996, divorced in 1999). The film was not well-loved, as were a number of other
films. In 1997, however Jolie was the subject of much interest as the wife of
Alabama's segregationist governor in the film George Wallace, and she was later
awarded an award called the Golden Globe Award for her performance. In the HBO
movie Gia Jolie played a supermodel with drug addiction. She received numerous
honors as well as the Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award. She
appeared alongside John Cusack in Pushing Tin in 1999. The following year, she tied
the knot with Thornton (divorced in 2003). She played the wife of the carjacker
(Nicolas Cage) in Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) and later changed her accent to
the British accent, and mastered street fighting and kickboxing to play the
lead roles in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The
Cradle of Life (2003). She played the mother of Alexander in Oliver Stone's
Alexander (2004) as well as was in the film with Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow
in Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow (a sci-fi thriller set 1930s New York
City). Both films failed in terms of box-office revenue, however Jolie's Mr.
& Mrs. Smith (2005) was the biggest success. Jolie played a character
pretending to be a normal domestic worker while working on the film. Brad Pitt
became her partner in the film.
